The first in a series of short stories based on the curious people and peculiar events of Abiaka County, Florida. Predominantly rural and off the beaten path, this is the Sunshine State visitors never see. While tourists busy themselves at the theme parks and beaches, outlet malls and sub-tropical resorts, the residents of Abiaka County go about their lives as if the world outside the county’s borders doesn’t exist.
When two young women with promising futures disappear without a trace, the fiercely driven Sheriff Karl Sweeney takes the crime personally. Challenged and chagrined by the vain, inane, and eminently self-promotional mayor of Vista Springs, Sweeney calls on his mentor, his second in command, and his wits to enforce a brand of justice for the memory of the victims. If he can’t make the traditional legal version work, he just may have another plan of action.
